The Wonderful World of Wheat
January 17th 2009 02:08
I think it's time to pay tribute to those fantastic farmers in North America who grow the wheat that is a part of our daily bread and more. There's a great video on the National Association of Wheat Growers site and YouTube explaining some of the process these men and women go through to ensure we have an abundant food supply each year.

These farmers are at the mercy of the weather, infestation, high operating costs, and even unreliable supply and demand pricing. However, they labor tirelessly year in and year out from early morning to late at night so that luscious loaf of sourdough or rye bread and others sit in the baker's window in your local neighborhood.
We owe them a debt of thanks. They should be the one's earning multi-million dollar contracts with option years, along with doctors, emergency response workers, police officers, and such.
Hard working farm families often pass the tradition on to each successive generation. In the video here you will see a farmer describe the process of planting and harvesting Winter Wheat. It's seeded in September and then over-winter's until it is harvested in August ( in Montana in this case). In more northern regions the harvest is a little later.
The wheat is ready for harvest when it is a golden color and when the kernel is hard.
Harvesting is more efficient today because of the technological advances of the harvesters. Needless to say, with the more complex machinery comes a need for more highly-skilled operators as this wheat farmer explains.
It's all part of the challenges farmers face on a daily basis.
Hat's off to North American farmers!!!
