Gastar Exploration Ltd. - Natural Gas Exploration and Production
January 30th 2009 04:58
Gastar Exploration Ltd. is a natural gas exploration and production company. They operate with a dual strategy whereby they combine lower-risk coalbed methane (CBM) development with higher-risk, deep natural gas exploration projects. Founded in 1987 the Company's headquarters are in Houston, Texas.
The company has locations in the deep Bossier play, East Texas; Powder River Basin, Wyoming; in the Marcellus Shale in the Appalachian Basin in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. ; and in New South Wales, Australia. The Deep Bossier location in East Texas provides Gastar an avenue for significant near-term production and reserve growth. Gastar has acreage located in the Hilltop area of Leon and Robertson Counties, Texas.
Gastar owns an approximate 40 percent average working interest in acreage in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. Gastar has coalbed methane wells in this Basin. Coalbed methane wells are shallow and less costly than conventional natural gas wells. They provide for less drilling risk. Coalbed methane is natural gas found in coal seams.
In New South Wales, Australia, in the Gunnedah Basin, Gastar holds a 35 percent working interest in coalbed methane rights under their exploration license for their acreage there. They control this with their joint development partners. Gastar is in a position to participate in the growing southeastern Australia markets. These markets are turning more and more from coal to cleaner-burning natural gas to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Unconventional gas production is gas produced from tight sands, shales, and coalbed methane. Technological advances in drilling, fracturing, and completion technologies have recently allowed the exploitation of natural gas reserves found in these tight sands, shales and coalbeds. Production from these sources was not successful, or not economically feasible to develop prior to the development of these new technologies.
