Land O' Lakes, Inc.
In 1921, an enterprise began, as a cooperative, and developed a way for processing butter from fresh sweet cream. The traditional method up to that point was to use sour cream and then sell the resultant butter in tubs. This farmer cooperative had a different idea. After formulating their butter from this sweet cream, they then proceeded to market it in one-pound packages with butter sticks individually wrapped. Convenience, convenience, and more convenience...and the product grew in popularity.
This cooperative incorporated on July 8, 1921. They went by the name Minnesota Cooperative Creameries association. Next, a contest was held to come up with a brand name and trademark for their golden butter. The prize up for grabs was $500...in...you guessed it...GOLD!
Mrs. E.B.Foss and Mr. George L. Swift won for the name Land O' Lakes after the State's many clear lakes. In 1926, the cooperative changed their moniker to Land O' Lakes Creameries and subsequently to Land O' Lakes, Inc. Eventually, the enterprise branched out beyond their buttery beginnings.
Today Land O' Lakes sells dairy products from butter to cheese and deli cheeses. They also sell foodservice sauces and dairy ingredients for other food processors. Their mission is to provide America's farmers, ranchers, and consumers quality products and services. They are still, to this day, a premier farmer-owned cooperative in the United States. The Company does business the fifty-fifty way. They market in all fifty states and to over fifty countries.
The Company offers farmers, local cooperatives, and consumers' agricultural supplies. These include feed, seed, and crop nutrient and crop protection products. Land O' Lakes is the largest feed company in North America, and the world leader in animal milk replacers and alfalfa seed. In addition, they are the largest distributor of agronomy products in the United States.
Now, back to butter; the Company continues to offer butter in many ways. They offer their traditional salted butter by the pound. They also market their pound butter in a new "eight half sticks" version. They have their light butter, whipped butter, and flavored butter as well.
Now Put this on Your Bread and Butter It...
Grade AA Butter sells on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) in contract sizes of 40,000 pounds. The Tick Size (minimum fluctuation) is $0.00025 per pound, which equals $10.00 per contract.

You're right...consistent, innovative business practices ...no get-rich-quick schemes here...just hard work and a disciplined corporate focus and look where they are today. There's something to be said about companies who stick to basic business fundamentals!
Thanks,
Mike
